All media messages are constructed with a specific purpose, usually to inform, persuade, or entertain (or all three).
When you are reviewing a media message, ask yourself "Can I tell why this message was created?" Was it created for: Financial gain? Personal opinion? Political motivation?
The media messages of TV shows, magazines, and web pages have media messages of commercials and advertising embedded within them. Without really thinking about it, you probably realize that the commercials and advertising were placed within the entertainment show to create profit. But also consider that the entertainment was created with a specific audience in mind, and that the creative process was partly guided by the need to create an audience for the commercials and advertising that would be included.
